Pruning Throught the Word

God’s method of pruning is his Word, as Jesus describes in John 15 and also as Paul states in 2nd Timothy 2:16. However, thanks to our free will, we can choose to learn in other ways. Often times rather than letting the Word prune us we choose to learn through experience and error.
Unfortunately, we often give God credit for teaching us a lesson we’ve learned on account of our own stupidity. I don’t think God enjoys getting credit for so many dumb things. For example, I could choose to act foolishly and run out into traffic. If I got struck by a car and ended up in a body cast for 3 months I might end up spending more time in prayer and receive deeper revelation of God’s love for me. That could be a great outcome.
However, it would be very wrong of me to say “God had to teach me how to spend more time with him by hitting me with a car.” This example may seem ridiculous but it is a common practice for many of us to give God credit for our bad choices. God’s not the one who is making us do dumb things. He doesn’t want us to be harmed. That’s why he doesn’t want us to sin, sin is dumb and it always ends up hurting us. Giving credit to God for our own stupid actions is like saying God made us sin. That is ridiculous! Seriously, think about, how many times have you heard Christians give God get the credit for horrendous things such as natural disasters, incurable diseases, and untimely deaths? God’s not the one who brought sin into this world, we did. God’s the one sent Jesus to redeem us from sin. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.
Let God teach you by His Spirit through His Word. Our Heavenly Father is a loving Father and He wants you to teach and correct you in a loving way. If you are struggling in this area, ask the Holy Spirit to bring the Word alive as you read it. As James 1 states, ask for wisdom and understanding and He will give it to you!
